In an unlikely year, Dodgers and Lakers bring a championship back to LA

On Oct. 11 of this month, the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA championship. On Oct. 27 of this week, the Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series, bringing back the two titles to the city of Los Angeles for the first time since 1988. (LA times reports)

The Lakers won their 17th championship against the Miami Heat in game 6 of the NBA finals 106–93 after a tragic and historic year. This win came after Lakers’ legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna’s death in January of this year.

Two weeks later, the Dodgers are also in game 6 of the World Series. They came to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays 3–1 to end the shortened 60 game MLB season, claiming the franchise’s seventh title. After three World Series appearances in four years, and winning the divisional championship for eight straight years, the Dodgers win the title.

Both teams had their respective standout players for the series: Lakers’ Finals MVP Lebron James, and Dodgers’ World Series MVP Corey Seager. Other significant performances include Lakers’ Anthony Davis, Dodgers’ famed pitcher Clayton Kershaw and newcomer Mookie Betts.

The trend #LATogether has been around since 2011, but means something much more following these dual championships for the Lakers and Dodgers. The celebrations are hopefully soon to come, as Lebron James has wished for since the wins.
